Introduction in Tehran City Theatre

The Tehran City Theatre is one of the influential cultural centres in Tehran, which contains the heritage of the performing arts at its heart. The nostalgia complex is located in the heart of Tehran, in one of the most crowded areas of the capital, adjacent to the Daneshjoo Park. If you are interested in art and culture, do not miss visiting the City Theatre because it is considered one of the most significant theatre and art centres.

The building was built in the 70s A.D during the reign of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and by his wife, Farah Pahlavi. It is said that before the construction of the City Theatre in the current location, the Municipality Cafe, Tehran’s second entertainment centre, was located in this area, where groups of magicians and circus entertainers performed and gathered people to get away from everyday worries for a moment.

After several trips to foreign countries, Farah Pahlavi ordered the building of a European-style theatre centre in the Shahrdari (Municipality) Cafe. In 1967 A.D, the construction of the City Theatre building was started by engineer AmirAli Sardar Afkhami, and in February 1972 A.D, it was officially opened as the most modern theatre in Tehran. The City Theatre has hosted many theatre groups, and the greatest Iranian directors and actors have performed in that play.

The architecture of the Tehran City Theatre

The striking building of the City Theatre contains unique architecture. The place is designed using circular shapes and a combination of hand arches and modern architectural structures. The place can be considered a combination of various architectural styles, a cylindrical building reminiscent of the Toghrol Tower and the architecture of the Seljuk period, and the building also inspired by ancient Greece and Rome.

The materials used in it are an eye-catching combination of tiles and bricks. There are also symmetrical columns in the style of Persepolis (Takht-e Jamshid) around the building. The design of the City Theatre is visually reminiscent of the Beckman Hall Institute of Technology in California.

The building currently includes five theatres. The main hall of the City Theatre is located on the ground floor, and the Qashqai, Cheharsou, Sayeh, and the performance studio are located on the lower floors of the building.
